Day 1
Our guide for this four-day trip will meet you upon arrival at
the Yangon International Airport. The first leg of the tour will
take you to Thanlyin, about one hour’s drive from Yangon. Along the
way you will cross the beautiful Thanlyin River. Participants will
also have a look at a beautiful – and very old – Portuguese Church
that dates back to 1749. Thanlyin’s main attraction is the Ye Le
Paya, which sits on a small island on the river.
Following the visit to the pagoda we will visit 100 nat – powerful
spirits that coexist alongside Theravada Buddhism – shrines in and
around one of the town’s monasteries. Then there will be time to
visit the visit Kyauktan market before heading back to Yangon for a
late lunch. The evening’s sightseeing includes a visit to Myanmar’s
best-known icon, the Shwedagon Pagoda, which you will enjoy at the
best time, sunset. From there it will be off to dinner before your
first night’s sleep in Myanmar.
Day 2
After breakfast at the hotel, we will drive you to Bago. On the
way there we will visit the World War II cemetery on the outskirts
of Yangon. During the drive we will stop in at the Shwe Nyaung Bin
shrine, which is actually a banyan tree popularly believed to house
a nat spirit. That spirit is said to have special powers that help
those who pay their respects in the correct manner to avoid
accidents.
Interesting sites in Bago include the Kya Khat Weing, Shwe Thar
Lyaung (the nation’s most beautiful reclining Buddha) and
Kanbawzathardi Palace, which was once home to King Bayintnaung.
Lunch at Bago. After that our guide will lead you to Shwe Mawdaw
Pagoda before the 2.5 hour drive to Kyaikhtiyo, or the Golden Rock,
where you will check in the Hotel. Before and after dinner you will
have an opportunity to explore the amazing sight of the gilded rock
perched on the cliff face.
Day 3
In the morning participants can either pray or enjoy more
sightseeing around the mountaintop before driving back to
investigate more of Bago’s famous sights, including the Lay Myat Nar
Paya(Kyaik Pon). This fascinating structure has four Buddha images
each facing in a different direction. Lunch will again be taken in
Bago, before you will be driven back to Yangon.
In Yangon the tour will take in the Kabar Aye Pagoda, which houses
the Jade Temple, a White Elephant and one of the Buddha’s teeth.
In the evening you can walk around Yangon’s vibrant Chinatown area
before returning to the hotel to spend the night.
Day 4
On the following morning there will be visits to the Kyauktawgyi,
Sule and Botahtaung pagodas, the last of which is one of Myanmar’s
most holy Buddhist sites and contains a number of Buddhist relics.
After lunch, you will have one last chance to shop in Yangon, with
our recommendation being to visit Bogyoke market, which is a large
and very busy marketplace in the heart of downtown Yangon. In the
evening, we will take you to Yangon International Airport for your
departure.
